Question 3: Digital Communication and Fluencies: Napalm Girl

Napalm Girl:

I don't believe that the image is appropriate especially in the context of the time it took place in. The media was trying to justify the fact that war at the time was at an all time low and dissipated state. It may have depicted the 'Napalm Girl' in immoral context but may have opened peoples view of what actually happened in the war. Many believe that she in fact saved and helped to end the war. Although the picture may have helped end the war it may have also had a serious negative impact for the little girl as she would forever be known as the naked napalm girl and she would never be able to erase that image from her digital footprint as it is engraved forever. With communicating and digital access one must be responsible and aware of what you are engaged in, comment or post online as it will have consequences and it must be used with respect.

The Collaboration Fluency: The picture contributed to the collaboration of different people and peace as this image was one of the elements that led to the collaboration of the nations that led to the Paris Peace Accords. The intent of the picture was to make the nations aware of the suffering and dangers that the civilians were going through due to the war but picture contains some form of inappropriate communication to the individuals. The "Napalm Girl" image requires viewers to understand the aspect that are depicted in the image to get the true meaning behind it.

The Media Fluency: I do not think that the image is very appropriate as the image portrayed the way that the Vietnam war caused suffering and pain to the civilians. The picture title "Napalm Girl" and the very picture itself was used as a medium of getting the very important message to the public. The content, 9 year old Kim Phuc had ripped off her burning clothes following a napalm attack, but her skin continued to burn. The outcome, a treaty was signed but the UN to protect civilians.
